The Rules of Pickleball: A Beginner's Guide

Pickleball is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports around the world, loved for its simplicity and accessibility. Whether you’re new to the game or looking to brush up on the basics, understanding the rules is essential for playing and enjoying pickleball. In this guide, we’ll break down the fundamental rules of pickleball in a clear and engaging way.

What is Pickleball?

Before diving into the rules, it’s helpful to understand what pickleball is. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s played on a court with a net, a paddle, and a perforated plastic ball. The game can be played as singles (one player on each side) or doubles (two players on each side).

The Basic Rules of Pickleball

  1. The Serve
    • Starting the Game: The game begins with a serve. The server stands behind the baseline and serves the ball diagonally to the opponent’s service court. Serve must be underhand, with the paddle making contact below the waist. The server must keep both feet behind the baseline until the ball is struck.
    • Let Serves: If the ball hits the net but lands in the correct service court, it’s a let and the serve is retaken. If it hits the net and lands outside of the opponent’s service court, it’s a fault and you only get one more chance at a serve before you lose the point, akin to tennis.
  2. The Serve Return
    • Double Bounce Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side of the net before players can start volleying (hitting the ball in the air without a bounce). This means the serve and the return of serve must both bounce.
  3. Scoring
    • Points: Points are scored only by the serving team. Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by 2 points. Doubles players on the same team switch sides of the court when a point is scored.
  4. The Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)
    • Definition: The non-volley zone is a 7-foot area on both sides of the net where players are not allowed to volley the ball.
    • Kitchen Rules: Players can enter the non-volley zone to play a ball that has bounced but must exit before volleying.
  5. Winning the Game
    • Game Points: A typical game is played to 11 points, but competitive matches may go to 15 or 21 points, always with a win by 2 rule. A typical match consists of 3 games with the first to win 2 being the winner.

Tips for Beginners

  1. Start Slow: Focus on getting the ball over the net and onto the correct court.
  2. Footwork: Good footwork can make a big difference. Stay light on your feet and be ready to move.
  3. Practice Serves: Serving is crucial in pickleball. Practice different serve techniques to gain confidence and skill.
  4. Stay Out of the Kitchen: Be mindful of the non-volley zone. Avoid stepping into the kitchen unless the ball has bounced.
